POSITIONS AND PRATICE – TOPIC 4 – FORUM

Reading photographs

Back in 2010 a creative newspaper and magazine advertising campaign for the UN refugee agency has won a prestigious Clio award in New York. The images would show apocalyptical photographic images featuring the message: “Refugees want the same problems as you have.”

In this one, an African woman stands by a wash tub in a semi-arid landscape and holds a red sock that has run and stained the rest of her washing. The objective was clear, to bring awareness to the cause of refugees, the authors of the pictures tried to connect the day-to-day life struggles of the viewers with the subjects on the images.

Yes, refugees are normal people that do regular activities as anybody else but unfortunately were deeply affected by some out of their control type of force that led them to have no other option apart from fleeing. The caption creates irony and some level of comedy that also deeply engages with the audience.
